Am/Am Competitions are couples who are both amateur dancers. 

Competitions will cost a couple $100-$400 for entry fees usually about $200-$300) and one or two nights in a hotel, meals, and transportation.  Plane fares can usually be obtained for $400-$600 to go anywhere in the US with early reservations.  Total package with 2 nights in a hotel, plane fare, entry fees, excluding meals will cost from $900-$1800 per couple.  If the competition is close enough to drive to then the costs can be lowered substantially.  In the following amateur listings the NQE means a Nationals Qualifying Event.  You must dance at a NQE to compete at Nationals .  Many competitions for amateurs can be found at the following link under the DanceSport tab:

Pro/Am Competitions are couples with one professional and one amateur dancer.  

• Cost of a Pro/Am competition can cost from $3000-$10000 depending on the number of entries and cost of plane fare and hotel. 
• A typical amateur competition in comparison will cost a couple about $800-$1500 including plane fare and hotel with as many entries as the couple is eligible for included in that price and even less if you can drive there. 
• For example, driving to Shakopee, MN to compete in Star of the North: Hotel cost about $200 for Friday and Saturday night, gas to drive there and back about $80, entry fees for unlimited entries and 3 classes on Sunday $190, meals about $100 for a total cost of about $550.  Chicago competition would be a bit more expensive.
